Highlights of Brazil

This suggested itinerary combines the fabulous city of Rio de Janeiro with the impressive Iguazu waterfalls before travelling into the heart of the mighty Amazon River. After a couple of days in Salvador the journey ends with a few days on the beach.

Highlights:  Rio de Janeiro – Iguazu Falls – Amazon Rainforest – Salvador – Beach

We can adapt the itinerary to include a wildlife trip to the Pantanal, the gold mining colonial heritage of  Ouro Preto or  the delights of Paraty and we can extend the itinerary for onward travel to little-known Paraguay, undiscovered Bolivia, Uruguay or Argentina.  We will advise on hotels from standard three star accommodation to five star luxury.

01

Day 1

Rio de Janeiro

You will be met at the airport and driven to your hotel.

Rio de Janeiro is a city which should be on everyone's wish list. It has the most spectacular setting of all the South American gateways. The twin peaks of Sugarloaf and Corcovado with its famous statue of Christ dominate the landscape but the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are the life and soul of the city during the day, the bars and restaurants come into their own at sunset and the nightclubs keep the samba rhythms beating through the night.

Day 2

Rio de Janeiro

Full day tour to Sugarloaf and to Corcovado. Visitors may be interested to hear that people were travelling to the top of Corcovado for the fantastic views long before the Statue of Christ was erected in 1931 and might like to know that the first person to climb Sugarloaf was a British woman, two hundred years ago in 1815 and she carried the Union Flag, as you do. Today you can still see people climbing Sugarloaf though we prefer to take the cable car, flags not required.

Day 3

Rio de Janeiro

Free day in Rio de Janeiro. Please let us know if you are interested in any particular activities or excursions, a tour of the Maracana stadium, a visit to Petropolis once the summer capital of Rio, a visit to a samba school, a culinary experience or perhaps a visit to a ballet school in one of the favelas which is supported by the Latin America travel industry via the LATA Foundation.

Day 4

Iguazu Falls

Fly to Iguazu and transfer to your hotel. One of the great wonders of the natural world, the Iguazu Falls (also referred to as Iguassu and Iguaçu) are a must for the first-time visitor to Brazil or Argentina and should be seen from both sides.

If you are staying at the fabulous Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas (formerly Orient-Express) you can step out of the property and walk directly down the pathways on the Brazilian side of the falls. If you are staying elsewhere and would like us to book a guided tour of the we would be delighted to do so.

Day 5

Iguazu Falls

Half day tour to the Argentine side of the Falls. If you would like us to include an excursion to the Itaipu Dam, which provides hydro-electric power to Paraguay and the whole of Southern Brazil, please let us know.

Day 6

Amazon Rainforest

Early morning departure from your hotel at Iguazu to fly across Brazil to Manaus.. You will be met on arrival at the airport and driven to the port to board your boat to reach your lodge in the Amazon, your base from which to explore the surrounding rainforest. Wherever possible we will try to include the "Meeting of the Waters" where you can see how two important tributaries of the mighty Amazon - the Solimoes River and the Rio Negro - converge and run side by side for four miles but do not mix.

Days 7-8

Amazon Rainforest

Guided tours and excursions in the jungle such as rainforest walks, bird-watching and alligator spotting by flashlight in dugout canoes.

Day 9

Manaus

Transfer from your Amazon lodge in the morning. Afternoon city tour of Manaus, taking in some of the principal sights which are the legacy of the rubber boom of the 19th century.

Days 10-11

Salvador

You will be met on arrival at Salvador airport and driven to your hotel. Afternoon city tour.

Salvador was founded by the Portuguese in 1549 on the high ground in the mouth of the Baia de Todos Os Santos. The Pelourinho district in the historical heart of the city the abounds with fine examples of colonial architecture, a lively area of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Day 11

Salvador

Free day in Salvador. Please contact us to discuss activities and preferences if you would like to organise something in particular, Capoeira classes followed by a show, or cooking lessons. We would be delighted to book a full day tour in the bay, visiting the islands of Itaparica and Ilha dos Frades.

Days 12-14

Brazilian coast

With a coastline stretching thousands of miles it is not difficult to find a beach. Praia do Forte is just 50 miles north of Salvador while Costa do Sauipe is a little further on. Trancoso, Boipeba and Caraiva are south near Porto Seguro. Natal, Fortaleza, Recife and Ilheus all offer excellent seaside locations or we can book a flight out to Fernando de Noronha. Buzios, Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande are all within easy reach of Rio. From colonial Paraty you can hire a boat to discover secluded beaches on nearby islands.
