Sometimes described as the ‘Tibet of the Americas’ in fact two-thirds of land-locked Bolivia lies within the Amazon basin. Our suggested itinerary combines La Paz and Lake Titicaca with a trip to the Amazon and to the Uyuni Salt Flats, a staggering 10,000 square kilometres of salt. Highlights: La Paz – Tiwanaku – Lake Titicaca – Amazon rainforest – Laguna Colorada – Uyuni Salt Flats We can extend this itinerary to reach the Atacama desert in northern Chile or to travel up to Cuzco and Machu Picchu in Peru.
You will be met on arrival in La Paz and driven to your hotel in the heart of the city.
A city tour with a difference, enlisting the help of a shoe-shiner to give an insider's take on La Paz for part of the day. The cable car offers fantastic views of the city and, after a spot of lunch, the tour continues with the street markets and colonial area of the city and a visit to extraordinary landscapes of Moon Valley.
Tiwanaku & Lake Titicaca.
The pre-Colombian site of Tiwanaku is located at the Southern end of Lake Titicaca and, though the Tiwanaku civilisation probably goes back to around 1600BC it is thought the ruins here date from 800-1000AD. Overnight in a local hotel.
Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca.
Travel to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca and by boat out to the Isla del Sol, arriving near the Pilkokaina ruins, It is a walk of about an hour to reach the eco-lodge here.
Return to La Paz.
Free morning to explore Isla del Sol before returning to your hotel in La Paz.
Fly to Rurrenabaque and travel along the Beni and Quiquibey Rivers to enter the Pilon Lajas Biosphere Reserve. Stay at a community-owned jungle lodge.
Excursions in the Amazon rainforest are included during your stay in the rainforest.

Return to La Paz.
Early morning departure from your jungle lodge to reach Rurrenabaque in time for your flight to La Paz. You will be met on arrival at the airport and driven to your hotel.
Travel to Uyuni.
A full day's journey travelling by bus from La Paz through the highlands to Oruro and then by train to reach Uyuni. Overnight in a local hotel.
Exploring the highlands
Visit the 'cemetery' of old trains outside town and then travel through the highlands, via the villages of San Cristobal and Culpina K to reach the rich valley of Alota and see the great stone formations caused by the erosion. Overnight in the village of Villamar.
Laguna Colorada and the Reserva Eduardo Avaroa
Early morning departure to enter the National Reserve. At 4278m Laguna Colorada is home to over 30,000 flamingos and one of the great highlights of the reserve. The journey continues alongside Challviri lagoon and via the high Dali desert to reach Laguna Verde. The tour continues with a visit to the Arbol de Piedra in the Siloli desert before finally arriving at Ojos de Perdiz.
Morning departure via minor lagoons and the Alota valley before entering the Uyuni Salt Flats and travelling across to to Isla Incahuasi, a coral island which is covered in giant (and ancient) cacti. Continue to Colchani and overnight in a salt hotel.
Return to La Paz.
Departure transfer to the airport in time to check in for the flight to La Paz. You will be met on arrival and driven to your hotel.
Departure transfer to El Alto airport for your transatlantic flight home.
